Counseling Philosophy
Hello, and welcome to our Cove Mountain Counseling Website. My name is Lauren Passarello and I am a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist with 23 years of experience. Through the years my focus as a therapist has evolved from "problem solving" to "pattern changing." Too often we live on "auto pilot" without truly being aware of being present in our lives. Instead, we behave in automatic, habit based patterns which effect our decisions and reactions. Clients often mention having repetitive life issues or repetitive ways of behaving. My focus in therapy is to help people break those patterns that keep us unconsciously on a spinning hamster wheel.
Whether I am working with couples or individuals, the focus is on increasing conscious awareness so that healthy choices can be made versus repetitive unconscious reactions. Many times stress, depression, and anxiety are related to how we think and what we tell ourselves. It is important to decrease the dominance of negative, conditioned thinking and "storytelling."
Specialty Areas
Although I have been trained as a Marital and Family Therapist, I have also become certified in Imago Relationship Therapy, Guided Imagery and Music, and Reiki because I believe that true healing requires a wholistic approach that meets the needs of the unique person that chooses to work with me.
Imago Relationship Therapy is a therapeutic approach to couples therapy. It is a pragmatic therapy that gives clients effective tools to empower them on their journey of healing and reclaiming wholeness. It creates emotional safety and intimacy, helps renew love and passion, decreases conflict, and heals childhood wounds. It can also assist singles seeking to understand their own journey as well as creating healthier relationships.
Guided Imagery and Music is a contemporary, experiential psychotherapy centered around the fine art of music and the skill of a trained guide. This method offers many possibilities for growth including aiding healing and recovery, improving relationships, enhancing self-esteem, dealing with depression, tapping creativity and imagination, managing stress, and connecting mind and body.
Reiki is a powerful, yet gentle method of healing touch that utilizes universal energy to bring profound peace and healing.
Using whichever method is most appropriate, along with traditional therapy, my specialty areas are as follows:
Couples
Stress Reduction
Co-Dependency
Divorce Recovery
Women's Issues
Depression
Anxiety
Grief
Mind-body Healing
Alternative Familes
Background
I received my masters degree in Child and Family Studies from the University of Tennessee and my doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University. I have been a clinical member of the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy since 1990. I was trained and certified in Guided Imagery and Music by the Mid-Atlantic Training Institute in 1994. In addition, I have been certified as an Imago Relationship Therapist by the Institute for Imago Relationship Therapy. I received my training from Hedy Schleifer, MA, in 1999, as well as advanced training for working with singles. I was certified as a Reiki Master Practitioner in 2005.
Seeking a therapist that fits for you is the first step in the journey toward healing and wholeness. If my philosphy or specialty areas do not meet your needs, I would be happy to help match you with an appropriate colleague. I truly believe that each person holds unique abilities to heal and that the wisdom lies within each one of us. The role of the therapist is to help unlock that wisdom in an atmosphere of safety and compassion. I wish you an incredible journey!!
